Maryland’s Charter

Today is the 387th anniversary of the Charter that Founded the Colony of Maryland. At least according to Historic St. Mary’s City. I think they might know.

In case you want to peruse the charter, the link is here. Just remember that the fancy f’s are actually s’s. The colony was supposed to be a haven for English Catholics, of which he was one. That didn’t quite work out, but that’s a story for another time.

Interesting, last week was the anniversary of the Sacking of Baltimore, but that was different Baltimore. The Baltimore that the Calverts where lords of was actually the name of the manor in County Longford, in the middle of Ireland, rather than the coastal city.
